For centuries Buddhists has placed a pair of "foo" dogs or "shi" lions in a prominent space to protect their family and home. The female is always positioned on the left and has a small cub clutching its right front paw. This symbolizes "yin" -  nature's cycle of life and protects those living within the home. The male is always positioned to the right and holds a decorative ball beneath his left paw. Which symbolizes "yang" - the world - and protection of the physical structure itself.

This large duo dates from the late 20th century. Each is made of porcelain and feature a rare pale yellow overall glaze. Embellished with handprinted decoration in rose, blue, ochre, green, and black tones. Both are unmarked.  Hence they may be of either Chinese or Japanese origin.
